German Prepositions: Complete Guide

German prepositions are tricky because they require specific grammatical cases. The good news? Once you learn which preposition takes which case, you'll never have to guess again!

Accusative Prepositions

These prepositions always take the accusative case:

Dative Prepositions

These prepositions always take the dative case:

Ich wohne bei meiner Großmutter.

I live with my grandmother.

Dativ

Two-Way Prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

These prepositions can take either accusative or dative, depending on meaning:

The Rule: Motion vs. Location

Accusative: Motion toward a destination (Wohin? - Where to?)
Dative: Location, no movement (Wo? - Where?)

Akkusativ (Wohin?)

Ich gehe in den Park.

I go into the park. (motion → akkusativ)

Dativ (Wo?)

Ich bin im Park.

I am in the park. (location → dativ)

Important Distinction

Ask yourself: Is something MOVING to a new location (accusative) or STAYING in one place (dative)?

Verb Pairs

Notice how verbs come in pairs: legen/liegen, stellen/stehen, setzen/sitzen, hängen/hängen. The first is active (motion), the second is static (location).

Genitive Prepositions

These prepositions take the genitive case (more common in formal/written German):

wegen	because of	wegen des Wetters
trotz	despite	trotz des Regens
während	during	während der Ferien
statt/anstatt	instead of	statt eines Geschenks
innerhalb	within	innerhalb der Stadt
außerhalb	outside of	außerhalb des Hauses

Genitiv

Trotz des schlechten Wetters gehen wir spazieren.

Despite the bad weather, we go for a walk.

In everyday speech, Germans often use dative instead of genitive after these prepositions: "wegen dem Wetter" instead of "wegen des Wetters". Both are understood!
